Steps to aged care

May 18, 2017

WHETHER for yourself or a family member, planning ahead for aged care can reduce stress levels. Here are the steps you should consider when planning to move to residential aged care.

Step 1 – Plan ahead- start with a family meeting to make shared decisions. Frank and open discussion is the first step to an effective decision-making process and avoiding family conflict.

Step 2 – Assessing options- you will need to have ACAT/ACAS approval before you can access a government subsidised home care package or residential care. You can book an appointment directly with ACAT/ACAS on 1800 200 422. Further information is available at

Step 3 – Searching for services- you can search for services by visiting and find a list of aged care facilities in your preferred location.  You can put your name on the waiting list for more than one service.

Step 4 – Understanding the fee structure- how much you have to pay may depend on the service you choose and your assessable assets and income.

Step 5 – Structuring finances- a low means resident may qualify for a government subsidy and will pay less.  However, choice and control may be lost and you may be offered a place in whichever service has a low-means place available, possibly even be a shared room.

Step 6 – Estate planning- review your will and ensure that appropriate powers of attorney are in place.  Loss of legal capacity to do so will mean it’s too late to set up powers and a trip to the Guardianship Tribunal will be needed.

We can review your full financial situation and provide advice on how to make appropriate decisions, structure assets to pay for accommodation and as well as create sufficient cashflow, minimise fees and maximise Centrelink or Veterans’ Affairs benefits. We can also facilitate a family meeting if required.
